Bringing accounts across from another host is routine, and cPanel to cPanel transfers are almost entirely automatic.
The easy path. If the old host also runs cPanel, use Transfer or Restore a cPanel Account in WHM. Enter the old server details and the account username, and WHM pulls everything across - files, databases, email, cron jobs, DNS zones. Nothing is deleted at the old host, so there is no risk in trying.
The manual path. If the old host is not cPanel, ask them for a full backup, then upload and restore it. If they will not provide one, you can rebuild from a files download plus a database export, which takes longer but always works.
Sequence a customer migration like this so their site never goes dark:
- Transfer the account while the old site is still live and serving.
- Test on the new server using a temporary URL or a hosts file entry.
- Lower the domain TTL to 300 seconds a day beforehand, if you have access.
- Change the nameservers.
- Leave the old account running for at least a week. Propagation is uneven and some visitors will still be reaching the old server for a day or two.
Email is the part that bites. Messages arriving during propagation can land in either mailbox, so tell the customer to expect it, and copy anything that arrived at the old server before you shut it down.
