Almost every dynamic site needs a database. WordPress, Joomla, Magento and most custom applications all store their content in one.

In cPanel open MySQL Database Wizard and work through the three steps:

  1. Name the database. Your cPanel username is prefixed automatically, so typing shop gives you something like user_shop. That full name is what your application needs.
  2. Create a user with its own password. Use the generator rather than inventing one - this password is typed into a config file once and never again, so there is no reason for it to be memorable.
  3. Grant privileges. For a normal website application, tick ALL PRIVILEGES.

Write down all three values before you leave the page: database name, username, password. You will need them in the next five minutes and the password is not displayed again.

One database per application. Sharing a single database between two sites works right up until you want to migrate or restore one of them, and then it becomes a genuinely difficult afternoon.
